The Namangan Flower Festival attracts thousands of visitors each year, but the spectacular, storied event remains little-known beyond the Ferghana Valley. This Uzbek man is preparing for the opening of one of Uzbekistan’s most charming yet least-known cultural events. The Namangan Flower Festival has been held in Uzbekistan’s Ferghana Valley every year since 1961 - except for 2020 due to the pandemic. The festival traditionally opens with a parade of cars covered in fresh flowers. The fragrant convoy drives into the center of Namangan, where the festivities kick off. Celebrated Uzbek photographer Anzor Bukharsky took these images of this year’s festival, which began amid stormy weather on May 22 and runs through June 5. Bukharsky says he only heard about the obscure festival by chance shortly before it began. The photographer and a journalist friend, Timur Nimanov, “immediately” jumped into a car to make the five-hour journey there from Tashkent. A crowd gathered despite the rain to watch performances that marked the beginning of the Namangan Flower Festival. Bukharsky says the crowded, rain-soaked scene above highlighted a hunger for public celebrations, saying, “Uzbeks are not indifferent to such events; they want spectacles.” As with most Uzbek public events, the festival is heavily policed. Bukharsky says that from what he could see, however, the officers at the festival were “very discreet, thank God.” A display made entirely of fresh flowers. According to Uzbek media, Namangan has been known for its flower production since the 1700s. Uzbekistan’s Ferghana Valley is a lush, fertile region of the largely arid country. Timur Nimanov, the journalist who traveled with Bukharsky, says last year's event was opened by an official who noted that while "many countries organize military parades in order to demonstrate their power, we hold flower festivals - symbols of peace, love, and peaceful development." Today, such a statement about military parades might be seen as politicized in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This year no comparisons were drawn to other countries' tastes in public events. For Bukharsky, the greatest surprise is how little is known about the Namangan Flower Festival, especially outside Uzbekistan. He said he hopes his photo documentation of the charming event can help raise its profile at a time when positive news is in short supply. "Flowers will save the world," he told RFE/RL.

Download Festival will be rocking into 2022 with a packed line-up - their first full festival since 2019. After last year’s Download Pilot, which paved the way for the return of live events, organisers are pulling out all the stops with a gargantuan line-up of the world’s most exciting bands in rock, pop punk, hardcore and metal. New names for the biggest first festival of the year were announced today, joining the epic bill originally planned for 2020, which was cancelled due the pandemic. Headliners KISS, Iron Maiden and Biffy Clylro will be taking to the stage at Donington Park, the spiritual home of rock in Leicestershire after the two-year delay. The line-up also includes A Day to Remember, Deftones, Korn and Lacuna Coil. Fourteen new acts have been added including Skindred, Yonaka, Kid Brunswick, Bimini and Dana Dentata. The three-day festival will take place on June 10 to 12. Yonaka live on stage at Download Pilot. Weekend VIP passes already sold out in the early bird phase, so festivalgoers are encouraged to buy early and save, as pass prices will increase in the coming weeks. A limited number of specially priced passes for military personnel are on sale now via GovX. Weekend Camping Packages are available for both car + tent and RVs. General Weekend Tent Camping starts at $225 and includes 500 square feet of space for two people, access to the A/C Camping Lounge, optional breakfast, lunch and drinks available for purchase, dedicated shuttles to and from the festival, re-entry during the festival via the camping shuttles, access to Camping Hydration Station, and access to showers and restrooms. General Weekend RV Camping starts at $380 and includes the same amenities as Tent Camping. RV sites with hookups for electric and water are also available for purchase. Admission to the festival is not included in Weekend Camping Packages and must be purchased separately. Ohio State Reformatory’s historic building and grounds provide a perfect setting for Inkcarceration. The massive, awe-inspiring locale is recognized as not only one of the most haunted reformatories in the country, but also as the filming location for multiple Hollywood films. The Ohio State Reformatory is centrally located, about an hour from Cleveland, Columbus and Canton/Akron, and within a three-hour drive from Toledo, Dayton, Cincinnati, Youngstown, and parts of West Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Pennsylvania.
